Action against rowdy Brits abroad!

Recently it’s has been reported through the media that heavy drinking and bad behaviour by British tourists abroad have reached crisis point on Zante one of the Greek islands.

Officials in Zante are meeting British diplomats and officials to discuss what to do about young, rowdy tourists from the UK who cause trouble. The Mayor of Laganas in Zante is so fed up he's demanding changes and says he wants to appeal more to families.

But hasn’t these issues been going on for years? Is it just the British? Aren’t other country’s to blame?

What do you think?

as above i think the blame must be shared these places ( ibiza- Faliraki-Malia- Chania- Aiya Napa and the rest) have all allowed this to happen - i know the younger end are better off in places of their own so as not to be a pain to families and older couples in resort but the bar owners should realise when people have had enough and chuck them out ( as happens in most places in the UK) but the kids do compund the problems by buying cheap stuff from the "offie" and i have seen them stagger out of the accomodation blind drunk and still go for more - its a catch 22 but faliraki seems to be quietening down -is it because the drunks are no longer tolerated as much as they once were or has flairaki had its day - who knows - the ones causing the most trouble are the people that would be seen down their local high streets at weekends behaving in exactly the smae way as they do on holiday -- which is another reason there seems to be more of them abroad -- the louts from the local high strets all congregate together on the resort high/bar streets and compound the problems because of numbers thats all

the kids ought ot make sure they don't fall foul of the laws of the countries they are guest in though as some are pretty tough and they do not have a namby pamby justice system which will slap their wrists for them ( as ours does)

Go on holiday and enjoy it

you can't do that if you get so blotto you can't remember half of whats gone on -- CAN YOU

I can agree with what you have said Julie that some "kids" do get rediculous - but not all of us do! I've been on plenty of these holidays and have had a fun time. But I do believe that in your time people got like this it is just more publicised these days.

kids are kids are kids are and yes we probably did get up to some of the stuff you do today - i didn't mean to imply all "kids" go away just to get mashed - my own 21yo went to Lanzarote earlier to get a PADI qualification - but when my sin was 18 and in rhodes him and some german and austrial kids got so hammered the buckets of ice cold water thrown over them didn't rouse them -- didn't go down too well in my opinion
It is the bar crawl mentality thats the problem - it happens as it always has --the boundaries have changed somewhat though and yes it has become more widely reported on same as everything

we would not have heard of the goings on in greece when i was 18 ( many many moons ago)

Lagana`s mayor say`s he`s fed up of the drunken behaviour of young british yob`s, and want`s an end to it. Does he not think if he bring`s a law in to his town, say no more cheap drinks or two for one, and the bar`s close earlier than the 4,5, or 6 in the morning it may not be as bad??.

I can understand where your coming from - but thats the kind of holidays people my age like to go on! I've been on a few of these bar crawls and there aren't that bad, but with cheap drinks offers who can refuse? I bet you couldn't?If we can't do it now we never will!

The majority of the blame must be borne by the host country, not just the individual bar owners. Lack of legislation is to blame. If the law did not allow these bars to stay open all hours, selling drinks at ridiculous prices they wouldn't be able to lure in youngsters.
it's time they realised they can't have it all ways - either they sell cheap drink, often to those under age and take the consequences or they sacrifice their profit margins and don't have the problem to complain about.
I find it hypocritical that these countries on the one hand complain about young drunken Brits and yet on the other - supply them with the alcohol, what on earth do they expect to happen? A Temperance League rally? :o)))))
We have to remember that a lot of these young people will be under age and vulnerable and it's unreasonable to expect them all to behave like responsible adults, when they aren't! They are often away from parental control for the first time and obviously the temptation is just too much.
This being said, when my children got to the age of being able to go abroad with friends, I made sure that they were aware of the dangers and how to avoid them, e.g. don't use a glass, keep hold of your bottle, always stay in a group and know your alcohol limits.
To be honest when we were younger, inflation was worse than it is now, holidays were proportionally more expensive and by the time you'd paid to see some sun and buy your food there wasn't much left. BUT - maybe it's because we weren't drunk all the time that we still remember how good it was!

We need to get tough on this scum that go abroad, cause trouble, and generally blacken the name of us reasonable Brits. There nothing wrong with having a drink, and possibly having one too many, but you do not have to behave like morons.
What I would like to see is the selective rooting out of these trouble makers, with the big riot sticks. Give them a good beating (as we should do at home), then put them on the next plane out, and then they can bleat about the treatment they have been given by those horrible Greek policemen.
