..I went on a 3 week interrailing trip around Spain. I had just completed my first year of university and felt like i was ready to take on the world.

Due to being a poor students we decided camping was the best way forward, even though we'd never really camped any further than our back garden.

1 week into the trip we got on the train to madrid and it all went down hill, in one evening we were pickpocketed, lost of phrase book (so reporting problems to police were near impossible) and managed to get off the train in a small tiny shanty town where no English was spoken and no trains for another 4 hours!

Luckily a kind taxi driver got us where we needed to be for no money, managed to communicate with the police via pictures what had happened and luckily my mum phoned and booked us a nights accommodation, so we didnt need to put up our tent!

Lesson here... if you are going to camp for three weeks around Spain, practise first in a country where you speak the language...

A couple of years ago my husband and I went to Gran Canaria on holiday. On the Friday we went up into the mountains past Soria to look at the scenery.I slipped on a very shallow slope and broke my ankle.I did a great job on it-compound fractures and bones sticking out etc.My husband had had a few beers so he couldn't drive,so while waiting for the ambulance,I had to drag up what Spanish I had(couldn't remember most of it!!!!) and try to explain to Avis(between the screams!!) that no- the car hadn't broken down but I had and could they please come and collect their shiny new car before something dire happened to it and I got landed with the bill for it.Must say the ambulance and hospital staff were fantastic!!Also,I had insurance and the European Medical Card,so it didn't cost me a penny.Went back the following year and met a couple who had a similar experience but who had neither. The husband broke his leg and it ended up costing them nearly e10,000.

Avoid transferring between terminals at Mumbai airport at night!

We had to take a taxi between the domestic and international terminals late at night because Jet Airways had delayed our incoming flight, making a very tight transfer that the inter-terminal bus would not have made.

Jet airways put us in a taxi, which then proceeded to drive down a dark side street, where an accomplice jumped in and proceeded to mug us by making us empty our wallets before bundling us out of one taxi into another to proceed to the terminal.

Jet airways then denied any responsibility, and threatened to throw us off the flight for turning up at check-in late!

My tip in general - avoid India full stop - it's not worth it!
